Registered Breeder
"The German
Shepherd Dog is almost universal in appeal, its sterling attributes lending it
distinction and importance wherever man needs a helper, a companion, a guard dog
for self, household, or where there is a specialised job to be accomplished"
- Ernst A Hart.
It is no small wonder that German
Shepherd Dog has become the most popular breed in the world and we are
privileged to be associated with this wonderful breed.
We are members of the German
Shepherd Dog Federation of South Africa and we associate ourselves with its
aims.
Aims of the Federation
(As taken from Animaltalk July 2002):
The federation demands that all
breeding within the organisation takes place within the framework of
international control and co-operation, based on the direction given by the
country of origin which is Germany.
One of the organisation's
earliest direct aims, and an aim to which it has remained true, was that all
breeding of German Shepherd Dogs had to be controlled and subjected to minimum
standards.
The first minimum requirements
introduced were that each dog, before it was allowed to be used for breeding,
had to be identified by a permanent tattoo number in the ear, had to pass an
official hip dysplasia test and to receive a grading of at least a "G" (Good)
from a qualified breed judge. In addition bitches had to be at least 20
months old and males at least 24 months old. In order to receive the "G"
grading a dog has to be free from disqualifying faults, may not be afraid of a
gun-shot and has to pass a basic temperament test.
While the above is still the
minimum standard, a second level of breeding was developed (in line with
the international dictates) whereby additional standards achieve by the parents
are recognized by issuing a special (pink) pedigree for their progeny. To
qualify for this level of pedigree, the parent of puppies have to past a 20Km
endurance test, an obedience test called a BH and a very advanced temperament
test together with other requirements that are periodically revised in terms of
need.
Through prudent and selective breeding, we have developed into one of the
leading kennels in South Africa, producing quality animals for the showring,
working disciplines as well as the decerning pet owner.
